Why Practical Skills Matter More Than Grades

In today’s fast-changing world, success is no longer measured only by exam results. While grades have their place in showing academic progress, they don’t always reflect a person’s true potential or ability to thrive in real-life situations. What employers and industries increasingly value are practical skills — the hands-on knowledge and competence that enable people to solve problems, create solutions, and add value to their communities.

At St. Dominic’s Technical and Agricultural Training Institute (TATI), we believe that practical skills are the real foundation for career growth. Whether it’s mastering a trade, learning modern agricultural techniques, or gaining technical know-how, these abilities open doors that exam scores alone cannot. Many of our trainees join us with modest grades from KCSE or KCPE, but through practical training, they develop the confidence and expertise needed to succeed in employment or self-employment.

The truth is, industries and communities need people who can do the work — fix machines, manage farms, run businesses, and create solutions. Grades may open a door, but it is practical skills that keep that door open and lead to lasting success. At TATI, we’re committed to equipping learners with the skills that matter most, helping them transform their future regardless of past academic performance.
